Make Your Own Charging Station and Clear the Kitchen Counter

DIY Charging Station for devices
DIY Charging Station

I’m brilliant! I made a charging station for our gadgets. Slots in this organizer are wide enough to accommodate the iPad, iPhone, Surface Pro, etc., without removing their protective covers.

Recharge up to six items with a desktop organizer along with a surge protector with six swivel outlets (here on Amazon). I already had this desktop organizer and saw some other ideas that would work on Amazon (like this acrylic one or mesh). And any outlet strip surge protector will work.

We use this overnight for all our gadgets and gizmos, all nice and neat, and didn’t have to spend $60 on a fancy one.

Any ideas on this are welcome in comments.

Combine PowerPoint Animations, Transitions, and Video to Create an Ad

After speaking engagements, I like to walk around with my iPhone and iRig microphone to capture testimonials. This video is from a recent conference, Society of Government Meeting Professionals, SGMP.org. I created portions of this video in PowerPoint with animations and slide transitions (in PowerPoint 2010, you can render directly to video).
I pulled the PowerPoint video into my editing software (Camtasia) and added music and the testimonial videos from my iPhone (I’d added all that to PowerPoint, but it kept crashing). I’ll send this to attendees and my conference host.
Check it out and let me know what you think.

Do-It-Yourself Photo Shoot Begins with Video

Have you wanted great action shots and took a ton of photos and still didn’t get exactly what you wanted? Try video instead, and set up a do-it-yourself photo shoot. With my iPhone and tripod, I was set. I looked at frames from the video and created high res photos. With frames, you can capture just the right move.

The first time I created the video, I opened the video in RealPlayer, and clicked Trim. I clicked on each frame using the right arrow key on my keyboard. When I saw something I liked, I held my mouse over the video, and clicked Save Picture. However, I didn’t like the quality of the pictures, so instead of saving the pictures in RealPlayer, I did regular screen captures. I inserted the pictures onto a PowerPoint slide, cropped them, and created high res output using ImageExport (I have a video series here with more information.

After I had all the pictures I wanted, I uploaded them to Animoto.com to snazzy up the photos and turn them into a video (I paid $6 to download that video as high res). Then I opened the MP4 video in Sony Vegas Studio 11 to trim off the Animoto logo at the end and add my Subscribe video at the end. After that, I rendered to the MP4, HD video format.

After I uploaded the video to YouTube, I created a spotlight annotation on the Subscribe button that links to my YouTube Subscribe page. This was fun!

I Installed a Wireless Router by Cisco in My Home Office – Did It Myself

I just switched to Comcast for high-speed Internet. I want all of my computers to have wireless access so instead of leasing a wireless router from Comcast, I stopped by Best Buy and picked up the Linksys® N Ultra Range Plus by Cisco. It’s a slick-looking unit that resembles something from outer space. I was expecting sticker shock but it was only $100 bucks.

I’m a computer trainer and not a hardware person so I was a little skeptical about installing this router myself. I popped in the installation disk and was amazed at how simple it was. It walked me right through it with great pictures too.

My next step is to share printers and files. I’ll set that up and let you know how it goes.

So if you’ve been thinking about going wireless in your home office, there’s no need to wait any longer.

Note: Some Amazon reviews mentioned this product overheating so I stood it up on one side instead of leaving flat.

My New eBook – Shameless Self-Promotion: Do-It-Yourself PR. Get Found Online

Do It Yourself Search Engine Optimization – SEO
I’m excited to announce my new ebook, Shameless Self-Promotion: Do-It-Yourself PR. Get Found Online. Details are on my Website, including a partial table of contents and a sample chapter.

In the two weeks that it took me to write this ebook, I received calls from Fitness, Essence, Success, Black Enterprise, and Madison (Australia) magazines. They all wanted me to contribute my expertise in personal productivity to upcoming stories. I did not call, write, fax, or email any of these publications. Nor am I paying a $5,000.00 a month public relations agency (that can’t make guarantees), to pitch me to the media.

The journalists found me in Internet searches when looking for my expertise (time management expert, personal productivity expert, email expert).

Buy this book today and download it immediately! It includes online access to my national media database (television producers for Oprah, The View, and more).

Your purchase includes:

  • FREE updates emailed directly to you.
  • 24/7/365 online access to my national media database (television producers for Oprah, The View, and more).
  • Teleseminars (more to come on this).
Tell some people!

PEACE.
