My Little Plan for Losing Weight – Just Get Started

I am going to lose weight and get more fit. I have healthy eating habits, but I was spending too much time at my desk, in front of my laptop.

I started walking in my neighborhood, and I have a Yoga mat (Ross has a great selection) and hand weights (Amazon) that I use at least every other day (great lessons on YouTube for anything you want and at any level).

I made my first trip to the senior center Downtown Durham and signed up to use the fitness center. I connected with two classmates, and we commit to each other to come back. We do.

I needed to remove all barriers to procrastination. Make a plan and work it, as they say. Here’s the plan for getting ready.

  1. Schedule the time. Block out time on your calendar to do it. Turn off the TV, and you’ll be surprised how much free time you have.
  2. Buy some cute outfits so you don’t have to ponder over and stress out about what to throw on. If you haven’t exercised before, you won’t have anything suitable. I found some great buys at Dollar General (of all places). I’ve washed them and am happy to report the quality has held up (I have no interest in buying designer workout clothes…at least not yet).
  3. Organize everything. I organized the outfits with all the tops and sports bras in one drawer, and the bottoms in another. Everything is somewhat arranged by color.
  4. Bought another pair of sneakers (Ross for $20). I wanted a pair that matched most of my outfits.
  5. Bought a lightweight backpack. Whether I’m walking in the neighborhood or at the gym (senior center), I carry my ID and health insurance card. This backpack is lightweight and has a place for my water bottle. When I travel, it rolls and folds up into it’s own pouch.

I’ve been walking for a month or so (only about one mile, but hills). I’ve gone to the center for a week. I’m already seeing results…less back fat is the most noticeable LOL.

Tip: Lay your outfit out the night before, and put it on when you get up. When you’re ready, you’ll be ready.

Here are my dumbbell set with stand and backpack.

Add One Space After a Period, Not Two. Here’s How to Fix Your Document and Break the Habit

Since the advent of computers and word processing software, one space goes after period, not two.

Why? The simplest explanation is that in typesetting, software makes room for a wide font such as W.

One space has been the norm since mid 20th Century. “The Complete Manual on Typography (2003) states that “The typewriter tradition of separating sentences with two word spaces after a period has no place in typesetting” and the single space is “standard typographic practice.”

Find and Replace Command

In Microsoft software, use the Find&Replace command.

  1. Press Ctrl+H.
  2. In the Find what box,  type a period and hit the spacebar twice.
  3. In the Replace with box, type a period, and hit the spacebar once.
  4. Click Replace All.

The software will find all instances of where you added two spaces after a period and replace them with a period with one space after. Fixed before you can blink.

When I was in publishing and had to fix documents from other people, I recorded a macro and created a shortcut and a toolbar button that made it even quicker.

Break the Habit

To break the habit of adding two spaces after the period, every time you do two spaces, stop right then. Delete that last word (or more) and try again, focusing on doing one space. It’ll soon become the norm for you.

My Mail Station Idea – Everything Organized At Your Fingertips

mail station behind doorI like taking advantage of every space I have in my small home office. This is a solution I’ve used for years as a mailing station. This particular organizer is where I store various envelopes I use for mailing and also greeting cards. It’s perfect for my needs.

This is an over-the-door organizer designed for a small pantry. I don’t remember where I purchased this, but I found something similar at Sears and a similar one at Target.

Everything else I need to ship or mail items is in an organizer next to my desk and includes tape, multiple denominations of stamps, and mailing/shipping labels.

Etiquette expert, Jacqueline Whitmore, liked this idea. Here’s what she did with it (for office supplies).

Find the Right Laptop Part by Knowing Your Exact Model

The battery on my laptop has been malfunctioning for a couple of years, and now it’s completely gone. Before I ordered a new one, I wanted to be sure to order the right one the first time.

HP Laptop Battery eBayI found this link on the HP Support Website, and was one click away from getting the information I needed. The site identified my laptop, and listed all the information I wanted.

HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx Entertainment Notebook PC

I knew I had the HP Pavilion Entertainment Laptop Dv7, but I needed that “6b55dx” portion.

I went to ebay.com and searched “HP laptop battery Dv7-6b55dx,” and found several vendors selling brand new batteries for my 3.5-year-old laptop. Done.

The Letters on My Laptop Keyboard Faded. Fixed It With This.

I must not be the only one whose letters had faded off the keyboard because I found this very inexpensive solution: Keyboard letters.

faded letters on keyboard fixed with sticky lettersI ordered a pack of sticky letters from Amazon and very carefully adhered them to each key. Done. My laptop looks new.

Instead of buying a new keyboard for my laptop and shipping it to HP or leaving it somewhere for the installation, I spent less than $5.00 and fixed it myself.
